I was washing dishes when I improv-sang this song, thinking about changing the electricity bill from my late mother's name to mine. We ended up getting two bills—one in her name, and one in mine. Why would I pay the bill twice!?
There's lots of space in the piano accompaniment part in this one, as well as fun and satisfying harmonies, strategically and sporadically placed! It's a typical twelve-bar blues for most of the song, but then we get this awesome IV - I - I7/bVII - V7/ii - ii - V7 - I chord progression! Soooo fun to play!!
I realized that there are other things that we "pay" for, like past mistakes and regrets, in blood and shame, hurting ourselves literally, or emotionally beating ourselves up. It's pointless to keep berating and not forgiving yourself. I spent many years of my life telling myself I was stupid, worthless—lots of very negative self-talk. It wasn't until the last five years that I discovered and really started to embrace self-compassion and forgiveness. This song is a reminder for myself of that.
It was hard to remember where I'd use "I", "you", or "we" in this song. I needed to look at the lead sheet while recording and had to do many takes for me get the words and melodies right!!

Why would I have to pay it twice?
Why would I pay it twice?
Why would I have to pay it twice?
Why would I pay it twice?
Why, why would I?
Why would you have to pay it twice?
Why would you pay it twice?
Why would you pay it twice?
Why would you pay it twice?
Why, oh why would you?
Why would we have to pay it twice?
Why would we pay it twice?
Why would we pay it twice?
Why would we pay it twice?
Why would we have to pay it twice?
Once is good enough
Why would we ever have to pay for something twice??
Why would I have to pay it twice?
Why would I pay it twice?
Why would I pay it twice?
Why would I pay it twice?
Don't care if it's bills or blood or shame
Once is good enough
Why would I ever have to pay for something twice!?
