This song is my most recent composition, written a few years ago, after a very close friend of mine and I had a particularly painful falling out.
The idea for this album's title, "Stories with Strangers", more or less came from this song, or at least the title's concept did, which I then applied to the rest of the pieces and songs. The collection of songs in this album represents parts of myself, as well as other people, who used to be in my life but are no longer.
My distressed friend from middle/high school, the boy with the compelling voice, this former friend of mine... As well as the person I was in "Whoever You May Be" and each of the other songs. Those are all people I no longer interact with, but each of them left a small imprint on my heart, as many strangers do.

No one's gonna stay
If you keep pushing them away
Of course they're gonna leave
If you make them go
I wanted to say that I'd keep
Learning from you
But this lesson in pain
Is the best that you could do?
Put up a barrier around your heart
Never let another person in
Don't let anybody see
The light that shines inside of you
Build your walls and keep 'em up
The only way to truly feel safe
In the dark and all alone:
Is that your paradise?
Cause no one's gonna stay
If you keep pushing them away
Of course they're gonna leave
If you make them go
It hurt so much to hear
That no matter what we'd been through
You would prefer to have no one
You would prefer to have no one
No one's gonna stay
If you keep pushing them away
Of course they're gonna leave
If you make them go
It hurt so much to hear
That no matter what we'd been through
You would prefer to have no one
This lesson in pain...
